Pirda Agustin. 2024. Enhancing Students’ Vocabulary Mastery Through Drilling Technique at Seventh Grade in Smpn 03 Sokan in The Academic Year 2023/2024. Thesis. English Language Education Study Program of STKIP Persada Khatulistiwa. Advisor I: Henry Elisa, M.Pd. Advisor II: Tuti, M.Pd.
Keywords: drilling, substitution, vocabulary, mastery
This research was conducted to enhance students' motivation in learning and help them effectively master and memorize vocabulary, leading to stronger vocabulary skills. The aim of this study is to highlight the improvement in students' participation and vocabulary mastery through the use of the drilling technique. The researcher applied Classroom Action Research, with data analysed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data collection methods included observation, measurement, interviews, and documentation. The tools for data collection were observation checklists, field notes, tests, and interview guidelines. The findings indicate significant improvements in both students' vocabulary mastery and participation in learning activities. In Cycle I, the average score for students' vocabulary mastery was 48%, and in Cycle II, it rose to 77%. Students' participation in learning activities also saw progress, increasing from 68% in Cycle I to 79% in Cycle II. In conclusion, the drilling technique effectively enhanced students' vocabulary mastery and boosted their active participation in learning activities, especially for seventh-grade students at SMPN 03 Sokan.
