Nia Febiananda. 2022, An Error Analysis in Simple Past Tense Used in Students’ Writing Recount Text. Thesis, English Language Education Study Program of STKIP Persada Khatulistiwa. Advisor I: Tuti, M.Pd., Advisor II: Yokie Prasetya Dharma, M.Pd.BI. Keywords: Error Analysis, Recount Text, Simple Past Tense, Writing The background of this research is the phenomenon of student errors in using the simple past tense in recount text which occurs repeatedly and takes various forms.This research aimed to discover the types of errors and the dominant errors in simple past tense used found in students’ writing recount text. The researcher used qualitative research as the research design. The subject of the research was the students’ writing product written by 23 students of SMP Negeri 1 Kelam Permai class VIII. The techniques used by the researcher were documentation and interview. The researcher used document and interview guidelines as the instrumentation of this research. To analyze the document the researcher used error analysis procedures. The result of this research showed that as many as 62 errors were found in simple past tense used in students’ writing recount text. There were four types of errors found in this research, namely omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Omission error has a percentage was 32.25%, addition error has a percentage was 4.83%, misformation error has a percentage was 38.70%, and misordering has a percentage was 24.19%. Then, the dominant error was found namely misformation error with a percentage was 38.70%.
