The main problem with this research is that the students’ ability to write descriptive text is still low. The purpose of this research is (1) to know the students' ability in writing descriptive text for the seventh grade students of SMPN 9 Sintang. (2) to understand the difficulties in writing descriptive text for SMPN 9 Sintang seventh grade students. In this research, the researcher used qualitative research to describe the students’ ability in writing descriptive text at SMPN 9 Sintang. The researcher used interviews and documentation as a technique of data collection. The type of samples used in this research is purposive sampling. The researcher said the subject of this research consists of 36 seventh grade students at SMPN 9 Sintang. The researcher analyzed students' scores in a writing task, which took from the teacher. Based on the results of the writing descriptive text scores of seventh grade students of SMPN 9 Sintang, there were 6 students who got excellent scores, 6 students who got good marks, 8 students got average scores, 7 students got fair scores, and 9 students got poor scores. Students get zero marks for not submitting assignments. The most common difficulty in writing descriptive texts for seventh graders at SMPN 9 Sintang is vocabulary in English. Many students said English is difficult because they do not know the meaning of Indonesian.
