Abstract
Veronika Vika Bintang. 2023. The Use Of Chain Drill For Teaching Speaking At
Eighth Grade In SMP Negeri 3 Satap Seberuang. Thesis, English Language
Education Study Program of STKIP Persada Khatulistiwa. Advisor I: Henry Elisa,
M.Pd. Advisor II: Sijono, M.Pd. Keywords: car, chain drill, speaking ability, teaching speaking The research was conducted to answer the problems found in learning English, namely, students have difficulty speaking English, and student motivation needs to be improved. The research aimed to enhance students' speaking ability and motivation in speaking English through the chain drill technique. In this research, the writer used Classroom Action Research (CAR), including qualitative and quantitative data. The data collection techniques used were observation, interview, and documentation. The instrumentation used is an observation checklist, field notes, interview guidelines, speaking performance tests, and documentation results. To analyze the data, the writer used qualitative and quantitative data techniques. The results showed that in the first cycle, the average value of students' speaking ability was 53 and in the second cycle was 70, then student participation in cycle I was 68% while in cycle II it was 77%. The results of the study, it was concluded that the chain drill technique was able to improve students' speaking ability and student motivation. So, this chain drill technique can be recommended to be applied as a solution to similar problems and other problem focuses.
