Abstract

Jimmy Octavia. 2022. Teaching Writing Descriptive Text through the Implementation of Clustering Technique for Class X B Students of SMA Immanuel Sintang. Thesis. English Language Education Study Program of STKIP Persada Khatulistiwa. Advisor I: Yokie Prasetya Dharma, M.Pd.BI. Advisor II: Sijono, M.Pd. Keywords: clustering technique, descriptive text, teaching writing The result of the pre-observation showed that there were three main problems that effected students’ writing performance such as; students lack of motivation, lack of vocabulary, and lack of grammar knowledge. The objective of this research was to elaborate the students’ participation and to describe the students’ writing improvement in teaching descriptive text through the implementation of clustering technique for class X B students of SMA Immanuel Sintang. The method used was Classroom Action Research (CAR). To analyze the data of the research, the researcher used two kinds of data analysis; first was qualitative data which consists of observation sheets, field notes, interview guidelines, and documentation. Then the other one was quantitative data analysis consisting of the test. Based on the finding the used of clustering technique was effective way to help students improve their writing performance and participation on the classroom. The result of the first cycle for the student’s participation and students’ writing performance still low and did not pass the criteria of success of the research, so it continued to the second cycle in order to reach the goal to improve students’ writing ability. The result of the second cycle showed a significant improvement than the first cycle both on students' participation and students’ writing performance which means the use of clustering technique was effective to help students improved their writing ability. The researcher suggest that, before apply the clustering technique it is important to prepare and know the procedure of clustering technique which consists of some steps and those steps help to know the right direction before make the cluster of the ideas for a paragraph.
