Abstract
This research was motivated by observations in Grade V at SDN 13 Sintang, which revealed that students’ interest in learning during the implementation of the Independent Curriculum remained relatively low. Among the seven observed indicators of learning interest, only rule compliance was consistently demonstrated by most students. Other indicators, such as the desire to learn, attention, and initiative, were still weak and only evident in a small number of students. Student engagement also tended to be inconsistent across meetings. This condition highlights the need for an in-depth analysis of both supporting and inhibiting factors affecting teacher strategies aimed at increasing student interest in learning during the curriculum’s implementation. The purpose of this study was to describe the strategies employed by teachers to enhance students’ interest in learning within the context of the Independent Curriculum in Grade V at SDN 13 Sintang. A qualitative approach using a case study method was adopted. Research subjects included one fifth-grade teacher and 25 students. The study found: (1) student interest in learning remains relatively low. (2) teacher strategies are fairly effective, including thorough preparation of learning resources, clear communication of objectives, the use of diverse methods through differentiated instruction, and appropriate assignments. (3) supporting factors include teacher competence, skills in differentiation, media use, communication, student motivation, adequate facilities, comfortable classrooms, and school support. (4) inhibiting factors involve limited teacher readiness, lack of training and mentoring, poor time management, and insufficient learning support facilities. In conclusion, teachers apply various strategies in implementing the Independent Curriculum to improve student interest. This research hopes that teachers will fully integrate the Independent Curriculum into their strategies so that all students, including those less engaged, can experience learning that is more meaningful and enjoyable.
