physical response method in improving students’ participation and vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Belimbing. The total physical response method is language learning method which is based on the coordination
of speech and action. This method that uses motion to interpret the word. The purpose of training using this method is to help teachers teach English and create a pleasant classroom atmosphere, especially in increasing vocabulary mastery. The subjects of this research were students of class VIII B which consisted of 15
students, 8 male and 7 female. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). This Classroom Action Research procedure is taken from the design proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart. It contains two cycles and each cycle involves four steps: (1) planning, (2) action, (3) observation, (4)
reflection. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) uses qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data collecting is in the form of observation checklist, field notes, and interview guideline. While quantitative data is used to calculate student tests so that results can be obtained from student scores. The result showed a good improvement in students’ learning motivation to improve.
This can be seen based on data from observation checklist, field notes, interview guideline and test. In cycle I based on the result of the observation checklist is 54% and for the results of the student score is 56. While in cycle II the result of the observation checklist is 84% and the results of the students score is 76,25. Based on the results of this research it can be said that the Total Physical Response can improving students’ motivation and participation in learning activities and also to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.
