Reading comprehension is a fundamental element of education; however, many students still struggle to identify implicit information and main ideas within a text. This issue often stems from the use of passive and conventional reading strategies, leading to poor academic performance. This research examined the effectiveness of the SQ3R technique in improving reading comprehension ability of eighth-grade
students at SMP Negeri 2 Sintang. The SQ3R technique was capable to enhance students' engagement and comprehension in reading. A total of samples was 33
students from class VIII-I which participated in the research. This research used a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental, one-group pre-test-post-test design. The findings were collected through multiple-choice and essay tests and then analyzed quantitatively using SPSS 27. The results were normally distributed, and a paired sample t-test was used to test the significance of the data. The results
showed a significant difference in students' reading comprehension ability, with the mean score increasing from 60.57 in the pre-test to 80.00 in the post-test. The statistical test results indicated that the significance value was less than 0.05. In addition, the questionnaire results showed that students responded positively to the use of the SQ3R technique. These findings indicate a clear improvement in students' reading comprehension levels, as evidenced by a reduction in lower achievement categories and a corresponding increase in higher achievement categories.
Therefore, the SQ3R technique can be considered an effective instructional strategy and is recommended for English teachers to improve students' reading
comprehension in similar educational contexts.
