Abstract
Aomni Christi Herbertha.2025. Enhancing Student’s Writing Ability Through Literary Genre Exploration Technique at Eleventh Grade in SMA Negeri 2 Sepauk. Thesis, English Education Study Program of STKIP Persada Khatulistiwa. Advisor I: Tuti, M.Pd. advisor II: Ilinawati, M.Pd
Keywords: literary genre, exploration technique, writing.
This research was conducted to overcome the difficulties experienced by eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Sepauk in understanding text structures, such as narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and expository texts. Based on pre observation, students were only able to understand the contents of the texts literally and had difficulty analyzing the author's intent. Limited vocabulary mastery also became an obstacle in expressing ideas clearly and in varied ways. In addition, low interest in reading and minimal writing practice according to the type of text were also inhibiting factors. To address these problems, the writer applied the literary genre exploration technique. The purpose of the research was to increase student participation in learning activities and to determine the improvement of students' English writing ability. This research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) involving 30 students and was carried out in two cycles. The data collection techniques used both qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative data were obtained through observations and interviews, while quantitative data were obtained through student writing tests. The instruments used included observation checklist, field notes, interview guidelines, and documentation (such as video recordings). The results showed a significant increase in student participation and involvement during the learning process. In addition, students' writing ability improved in terms of text structure, content, cohesion, creativity, language use, and text length. In Cycle 1, student participation was only 63%, while in Cycle 2 it increased to 86%. As for the student writing test, the total average score in Cycle 1 was 60, and in Cycle 2 was 77, which indicated that the criteria for success had been achieved. This proved that the implementation of the Literary Genre Exploration technique had a positive impact on students' writing ability and classroom engagement.
