Abstract

This study aims to analyze the high-level thinking and problem-solving skills of junior high school students in
solving set problems, the abilities that students are expected to master, namely the ability to solve math problems
properly and correctly. This data analysis uses the stages of problem solving according to Polya (1973; 5), namely
understanding a problem, compiling a settlement plan, implementing a settlement plan and re-examining the
procedures and results of completion and indicators of higher order thinking, namely 1) analyzing, 2) evaluating,
3) create. The subject of this research is SMP Negeri 3 Sintang class VIII B consisting of 24 students. The
instruments used are HOTS test questions and interviews. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive
analysis method. Based on data analysis, it can be concluded that the errors made by students are mostly on
indicators of higher order thinking, namely evaluating and creating and problem-solving indicators, namely
understanding the problem. Students cannot understand the questions on the set material. In the indicators of
making mathematical models, choosing solving strategies, solving problems, and checking back on the answers,
only some students can work at this stage.
