Abstract

Veronika Anjelina. 2026. The Use of Spinning Wheel Media to Improve Speaking Skills of Seventh-Grade Students at SMP Negeri 7 Tempunak. Thesis. English Language Education Study Program at STKIP Persada Khatulistiwa Sintang. Advisor I: Ferdinanda Itu Meo, M.Pd., Advisor II: Henry Elisa, M.Pd. Keywords: speaking skill, spinning wheel media This research focused on improving students’ speaking skills and classroom participation through the use of Spinning Wheel media. The research was conducted to solve the problems faced by seventh-grade students in speaking
English, particularly in telling the time. The purpose of this research was to describe the improvement of students’ speaking skills and participation through the implementation of Spinning Wheel media. The subjects of this research were 31 students of class VII A at SMP Negeri 7 Tempunak, consisting of 17 female
students and 14 male students. The researcher used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, which consisted of two cycles: Cycle I and Cycle II. The data collection techniques used in this research were observation, interviews, measurement, and documentation. The instruments used were an observation
checklist, field notes, interview guidelines, speaking tests, and video recordings. This research used both qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed using the steps proposed by Creswell, namely preparing and
organizing the data, describing and presenting the data, analyzing the data, interpreting the data, and reporting the findings. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the use of Spinning Wheel media improved both students’ participation and speaking skills.
Students’ participation increased from 67.15% in Cycle I to 86.47% in Cycle II. Meanwhile, the average speaking score improved from 62.10 in Cycle I to 83.23 in Cycle II. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the use of Spinning Wheel media successfully improved the speaking skills and classroom participation of the seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Tempunak. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers consider using Spinning Wheel media as an alternative instructional media to improve students’ speaking skills and encourage their active participation in the classroom.
