Abstract
Kurnia Haron, 2026. The Correlation Between Student’s Reading Habit and Students Vocabulary Mastery At Seventh of SMP Negeri I Sokan. Thesis . English Language Education Study Program of STKIP Persada Khatulistiwa. Advisor I : Yokie Prasetya Dharma, M.Pd.B.I. Advisor II : Ferdinanda Itu Meo, M.Pd
Keywords: Reading Habit, Vocabulary Mastery, Spearman’s Rank Correlation.
This research aims to investigate whether there is a significant correlation between students’ reading habits and vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sokan. Based on preliminary observation, some students had not developed consistent reading habits, particularly in reading English texts. They also experienced difficulties in understanding unfamiliar words, identifying word meanings in context, and using appropriate vocabulary. This research employed a quantitative correlational design involving 22 seventh-grade students. The data were collected through a Reading Habit Questionnaire and a Vocabulary Mastery Test and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26. The instrument reliability test showed a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.855. The Shapiro-Wilk test showed significance values of 0.106 for Reading Habit and 0.014 for Vocabulary Mastery. Since the Vocabulary Mastery data were not normally distributed, Spearman’s Rank Correlation was used. The result showed a correlation coefficient (rₛ) of 0.073 and a significance value of 0.746. Since 0.746 > 0.05, the correlation was very weak, positive, and statistically not significant. Therefore, H₀ was accepted and Ha was rejected. In conclusion, there was no significant correlation between students’ reading habits and vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sokan.
